<p>The project is made out of two and half walls, that become a permeable surface marking a transition, but never completely isolating the interior from the rest of its context, since its also this condition the one enhancing the idea of transition, confronting and internal temporary condition with an external journey.</p>
<p>Walls are made out of vertical wooden ribs (pointing upwards to the sky).  In the base, these get denser to incorporate part of the program.  In plan the project has a triangular shape, that allows the vertical ribs to be oriented into different angles, which modifies the views in and out of the Sukkah.  The rib structure is reinforced with tubes running horizontally across the ribs and filled with luminescent fluid.  The roof structure is made out of wooden leaves and covered with reed.</p>
<p>Re/current stream should be coherent, so instead of constructing in a traditional sense, we plan to print all the pieces, from files into the material with the aid of digital tools.  These pieces will be cut and transported to Union Square where they’ll be assembled, making this process (and that of disassembly) faster and safer.</p>

<p>La vallata del fiume Vomano descrive un sistema di quinte sceniche che abbraccia il massiccio del Gran Sasso, le colline di valle e la foce al mare. La relazione fra edificato e campagna rappresenta la chiave di progettazione dei laboratori artigianali MdM, che concludono il piano di lottizzazione contiguo al borgo di Torre San Rocco, ai piedi della collina Col Morino.</p>
<p>Il corpo principale registra tale dualismo, incastrando una quinta scenica che abbraccia la collina, mentre il portico si struttura come un volume aperto verso la piana coltivata. Si é ricercato un dualismo materico molto deciso accostando il cemento liscio alla lamiera metallica ondulata: il fronte settentrionale si protegge ermetico dalle intemperie, mentre quello meridionale é inciso parametricamente dalla luce, sposando comfort illuminotecnico e dialogo con il paesaggio. Ad occidente, il fronte divide la presenza con la viabilità di zona; ad est si colora con il coltivato, attraverso l&#8217;uso del policarbonato alveolare semitrasparente. Perché anche con la luce artificiale i laboratori possano risuonare con la vallata.</p>

<h3>Introduction</h3>
<p>The Nimbus project should channel that ability that New York City has proven to have, being capable to dream about itself and turn that idea into a reality, a place where those collective dreams of its inhabitants can find a way to enrich the life of their citizens.</p>
<p>When an architectural object is thought from the beginning as a non-permanent structure that must be reflected in the design process as well as in the particular conditions that will model its useful life.  Temporality is inherent to humans and any claim of permanence in its architecture is on itself, a statement against the very nature of decay, which is part of a life cycle.</p>
<p>Considering the pavilion has a limited life span, that should be taken into its advantage and have it enjoy a productive existence.  During its time as a built object, it would host different activities for locals and visitors.  A dream place that must be relished though its existence in varied ways.  The pavilion will open most of the summer, and taking that into consideration, its program must be varied.  The pavilion is not only an enclosed space, but also a gathering spot that can additionally host exterior activities.</p>
<p>The inside of the pavilion can be well suited for different kinds of formal and informal meetings.  It can be used as exhibition space, place for lectures or even as a leisure spot.  Externally, over the platform around the pavilion, another array of activities is possible, especially those related with nature, such as collecting leaves, a sensorial garden, a place for socialization and to rest.</p>
<p>Considering the pavilion has a short lifespan, everything around it should be meaningful, the memories and activities, as well as its shape, texture and concept.  Even if the pavilion ceases to exist, those interactions should somehow survive, without the need of a physical space.  The transcendence of the building will be based upon its capacity to be memorable.</p>

<h3>Narration of the parts</h3>
<p>After the pavilion’s intended life comes to an end, it can easily be dismounted and the different components are recovered, without being destroyed or mixed. It’s not a demolition but a disassembly so all of the parts can be neatly separated and taken to another place for recycling or for further use. These parts can be either relocated in the island, thus reducing the negative environmental impact of its transportation or become something else for the city. As a suggestion, the structure could become a bird shelter, or even a bio-monitor for the New York municipality. The fabrics that make up the skin of the pavilion, as it is biodegradable, can be allocated in the surrounding area.</p>
<p>The only part that would remain after the pavilion is disassembled is the platform, as a testimony of the pavilion and as a landscape addition to the Governor’s Island context. Even if the pavilion is no longer there, the platform will carry on the memory associated to the object. In this sense, the lifecycle keeps going on, the platform that once hosted the pavilion, will later support a garden, the following season, even if the pavilion is not there, a set of plants and flowers will remember it. The material of the platform is also biodegradable, so gradually it will reincorporate to the ground, and through the months it will merge and finally fade. In this way the pavilion even if short lived, will remain there and will have a legacy.</p>

<h3>Technical description</h3>
<p>In an attempt to make the construction and un-building procedures clear an easy, the pavilion is made up of few different materials.  In this way, it’s possible to track where each of them is coming from and where are they ending up.  And it also makes clear the manner in which each of the parts interacts with the others; make it easier to assemble the pavilion.</p>
<p>The structure is not relying on a traditional deep foundation, but rather is anchored to the ground through a wooden platform made out of ribs.  This platform creates a transition space from the garden to the inside part of the building and can be considered a landscape on its own.  The tubes that form most of the structure of the pavilion are literally rooted in this platform thus connecting both structurally and conceptually to the ground, as if growing from it.</p>
<p>The bottom part of the building is made up of a rigid wooden rib system that helps enclosing the space.  This wooden structure is traversed with some flexible polypropylene (pp-r) tubes, which hold all the upper part of the pavilion and provide a dynamic appearance.  Besides that, this same weaving allows for the optimal localization of a double skin to protect the interior of the building.  One layer is a waterproof fabric, to prevent water from getting in.  This will make the pavilion a suitable place for activities even under rainy conditions.  The other layer provides solar shading to protect people and objects from solar radiation and to make it more comfortable.</p>

<h3>Ecological description</h3>
<p>All of the materials are meant to be either biodegradable or re-usable. Their physical dimension should also make them easy to transport.  All this conditions are required to have a minimum environmental impact.  After the pavilion’s life is over, it will be disassembled and its parts taken away.  Only the platform will remain there.  It’s made of a biodegradable material (wheat panels) that will gradually merge with the existing landscape. The wood and the tubes used as main structure are reusable specially considering they won’t endure major physical or chemical modifications. The used fabric is made out of natural materials, so it can also biodegrade.</p>
<p>Since the pavilion (and the island) would only open during daylight hours, the energy consumption would be minimal.  Even for the assembly, there is no need for complicated machinery; it can be done with basic tools.</p>
<p>The project has been tested for optimal performance in relationship with the weather and the natural conditions.  Considering it will stand up during summer, the direct sun in the interior is minimized; wind conditions have also been tested to make sure it’s a comfortable place for activities.  The fabric that’ll cover the pavilion is translucent, allowing some amount of daylight to get in.</p>

<p>Calcutta, India</p>
<p>According to U.N. surveys, inhabitants of Kolkata’s slums perceive the lack of infrastructural facilities as condition to escape from their poverty. Nonetheless they have developed a very sophisticated social network based on mutual help, community exchanges, education and spaces’ negotiation.</p>
<p>The project aims to build up an operative infrastructure that acts directly at lower scale, capable of adapting to several conditions, evolving and proliferating. An incubator of activity that will stimulate the social cooperation within slum’s communities. A micro-infrastucture organization generates intense agricultural procedures (the inhabitants of the slums left the field to move in the city for better conditions) as an economical set-up.</p>
<p>The main basic component is a recycled pipe, constitued by two sub-units: an artificial and a biological part. Such component operates as a machine, engaging different programs as water phytodepuration, water filtering, vegetal cropping, rice and wheat farming, and organic waste treatment. Clusters of components organize ecological cycles, calibrated on the necessities of singles, families and sub-collectives.</p>
<p>This organization is an open social interaction: mutual exchanges or program interfecences catalyze multiple scenarios of evolution. Each macro unit becames a sensible organism that triggers sustainable processes, promotes slum’s identity and operates within principles of self-organization.</p>

<p>The pressure pattern helped to identify the critical zones in the proximity of the structure. The balcony in the old building strcture protects iternal window from high presure generated by the wind.</p>

<p>Detail of the tridimensional structure. The metallic structure acts as a real filter that redirects the airflow inside the enclosed area and slightly reduces the wind speed. This allowed the architect to design an urban area within the semi-enclosed space between the structure and the old building ensuring a well ventilated environment in summer conditions.</p>

<p>Lo sviluppo impetuoso che sta coinvolgendo le energie rinnovabili ha reso elementi come i pannelli fotovoltaici un elemento comune del paesaggio. E’ cruciale pertanto la ricerca di modelli di integrazione  spaziale avanzati e di esempi positivi che stimolino una sensibilità nuova verso questo tema.</p>
<p>PCUBE  é il risultato della volontà di integrare le energie rinnovabili in un oggetto di grande qualitá architettonica e spaziale. Il progetto di questo padiglione si propone imbastendo un progetto aperto, partendo proprio dall&#8217;analisi degli elementi tipici [industrializzati] delle attuali prassi nel fotovoltaico. Infatti, attraverso l’uso di tecniche avanzate di progettazione digitale è stato possibile implementare grandi quantità di informazioni e dati ambientali nel progetto, superando schemi rigidi e semplificati del comune operare. Il design del Pcube è basato su un modello geometrico parametrico, che permette l’adattamento della forma del padiglione alle necessità spaziali e programmatiche del sito di installazione.  Il modello parametrico permette poi di disporre i pannelli fotovoltaici di copertura tenendo conto dei cicli solari diurni ed annuali. Questi, infatti, possono essere posizionati ad orientamento costante di 30 gradi o ad orientamento variabile, entro intervalli computati per una migliore produzione energetica.  Il modello digitale permette di simulare la produzione energetica del padiglione e lo studio degli ombreggiamenti, consentendo così di ottimizzare la disposizione dei pannelli.</p>

<p>Il PCUBE è progettato per la fruizione aperta di atmosfere piacevolmente allestite, accoglienti, di notevole qualità spaziale ed impatto identitario e comunicativo: info-point, mostre itineranti sulle energie rinnovabili, ristoranti, lounge bar, stabilimenti balneari, hotel, spazi relax, etc.</p>
<p>Il progetto e’ stato reso possibile dalla collaborazione con l’Impresa costruttrice FAI Impianti, OFFICINA CREATIVA, Soc. Coop. Sociale e a Nitens, spin-off dell’ Università del Salento.</p>
<p>L&#8217;installazione è stata presentata presso la 72° Fiera del Levante a Bari e continuerà un percorso itinerante che la porterà nelle piazze di diverse citta’. Ad ogni tappa si arricchirà di eventi ed esperienze, con tecniche e modi d’uso innovativi. Il prossimo appuntamento a Lecce.</p>

<p>Il progetto si configura quale riscontro alla richiesta di formulazione di una proposta generale di ridisegno e sistemazione dell&#8217;area coincidente con la fascia costiera sud di Gallipoli, dal Piazzale Torre San Giovanni alla Torre di punta Pizzo, rispondendo puntualmente agli obiettivi assunti dall&#8217;Amministrazione Comunale al fine della compatibilità urbanistica, salvaguardia paesaggistica e conformità edilizia; ovvero di provvedere affinché tali requisiti siano raggiunti in vista delle esigenze dell&#8217;ente territoriale uniformando le infrastrutture preesistenti e di nuova realizzazione ricadenti lungo la fascia costiera.</p>
<p>Gli interventi proposti, al fine della regolarizzazione urbanistica ed amministrativa di cui sopra, riguardano la puntualizzazione delle destinazioni d&#8217;uso delle aree esterne circostanti le strutture esistenti e quelle di progetto, l&#8217;eliminazione dei detrattori e l&#8217;integrazione dell&#8217;apparato naturalistico che caratterizza l&#8217;intera area, al fine della contestuale fruizione e salvaguardia del bene.</p>
<h4>Concept / Intensitá Lente</h4>
<p>Il progetto rispondendo alle esigenze dell&#8217; Amministrazione locale, avanza una proposta d&#8217;intervento per la valorizzazione ambientale del territorio a fini turistici attraverso la creazione diun percorso turistico sostenibile in cui si alternano aree attrezzate e infrastrutture di servizio che nelle strutture architettoniche, nei materiali usati, e nella gestione stessa si presentino eco-compatibili, ovvero nel rispetto dei principi della sostenibilità ambientale.</p>
<p>Partendo da un&#8217;analisi di Valutazione d&#8217;Impatto Ambientale si è valutata la possibilità di realizzare dei percorsi e delle attrezzature finalizzate alla fruibilità e valorizzazione dell&#8217;area all&#8217;interno di un sito naturalistico di interesse comunitario (SIC) . Si tratta del &#8220;litorale di Gallipoli &#8211; Isola Sant&#8217;Andrea&#8221;, un sito complesso caratterizzato da diverse unità ambientali con forti valenze floristiche e vegetazionali che, il progetto renderebbe fruibile nel rispetto della sostenibilità.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The project focuses on the development of a housing system based on an adaptive ecosystem approach, on principles of environmental sustainability and energetic self-sufficiency. The impact of inhabit the ecosystem is defined by a complex (evolutionary) organization.</p>
<p>The model, identifying emerging phenomena, is structured through three complementary non-hierarchical moments:</p>
<p>1) Strategic, defined by inductive indications and criteria that structure the procedures;</p>
<p>2) Proto-typical, in which are defined dynamic associations between cyclic model-machines and manipulation of inputs and outputs;</p>
<p>3) Testing, advanced through the measurements of expected performances that calibrate the strategy and improve the prototypes.</p>
<p>The simultaneous coordination of these moments open the possibility to constitute an intelligent organism that explore different scenarios thought the incorporation of heterogeneous conditions.</p>

<p>In the specific case, the strategic starting point is the consideration of the symbiotic dynamics of the lichens that are based on two processes that are common to most of the ecosystems: photosynthesis and fermentation. The first one has been associated to the procedures of the plants while the second to the human actions that were targeted to be extremely connected to the natural and artificial life cycle.</p>
<p>The biological dynamics become the basis for the prototypes definition and developed through the experimentation of different machines:</p>
<p>1_ study of the symbiotic interaction between algae and yeasts, to understand the property of interaction and the quantities involved in the fermentation and photosynthetic processes;</p>
<p>2_ implications of field effect between different organisms;</p>
<p>3_ implementation of a geometric system and the study of these dynamics in model scale and territorial scale;</p>
<p>4_ association of a proper geometry to the dynamics of symbiosis and to the housing and cultivation program in the housing scale.</p>

<p>The house unit is divided, according to the symbiotic principle, in two fields: the lower part is dedicated to the fermentation process, related to the decomposition of organic waste of plants, digestion of waste and production of biogas. The upper one is dedicated to photosynthesis, plant growing, water collection and storage.</p>
<p>Every single house works as a complete unit, that organize internal cycles of re-uses and mutual benefits, both optimized for the natural and human life. Furthermore that unit operate to threat the biological and organic waste as natural regenerator of degraded soils, typical of the specific selected area. This means that the units operate thought a changing natural footprint that is determining the “life” of the architectural manufacture itself.</p>

<p>Because more is the quantities produced and consumed (Co2, O, waste, water) more is the space occupied, the proliferation of the units offers an important social experience. In fact, the social meaning of “property” is now shifted to a cooperation-property, where it is not the actual perimeter that define it, but the complex amount of activity that you do on it. The continuous negotiation among the inhabitants it directly translated to effect on the environment in terms of adsorption (+) and consumption (-), but also a specific spatial configuration that derives from this balance.</p>

<h3>INTRODUZIONE</h3>
<p>La recente realizzazione della pista ciclabile fra Pineto e la sua frazione Scerne si inserisce nel programma di stimolo delle dinamiche turistiche sostenibili, chiamato Corridoio Verde Adriatico.</p>
<p>La pista ciclabile, in particolare, ha svelato un tratto costiero caratterizzato da una vivace ed importante presenza naturalistica.</p>
<p>Lo scopo del Workshop é stato quello di pensare, progettare e realizzare strutture capaci di completare le esigenze di fruizione del territorio (elementi di arredo del paesaggio) e contemporaneamente migliorare le emergenze paesaggistiche.</p>
<p>Sedici studenti della facoltà di Ingegneria dell’Universitá dell’Aquila, insieme ad altri studenti universitari e progettisti professionisti hanno condiviso per una settimana un’esperienza progettuale intensiva, dal concept paesaggistico-urbano fino alla costruzione di prototipi in scala reale.</p>

<h3>STRATEGIA PROGETTUALE</h3>
<p>La strategia progettuale maturata durante le giornate di studio é stata coordinata bilanciano le tensioni programmatiche con la reale traduzione in azioni progettuali. La visione di un progetto condiviso é stata fondante per l’assegnazione di un ventaglio di momenti di intervento, capaci di integrarsi reciprocamente,  evidenziando le emergenze locali.</p>

<p>Da una tavola rotonda instaurata subito dopo la prima ricognizione dell’area, é emersa la comprensione di un potenziale paesaggistico non ancora espresso perché la presenza antropica riesca ad allacciare un rapporto di intima convivenza.</p>
<p>In particolare, dalla note e dai dibattiti raccolti, la pista ciclabile é stata foriera di una soprendente narrazione paesaggistica, capace di raccogliere entro una sola linea, retta, il cambiamento stagionale, le permutazioni cromatiche, le vivacitá botaniche, gli ambiti e le successioni di sequenze.</p>
<p>La scelta programmatica dell’amministrazione Comunale di preservare l’area dallo sviluppo edilizio ha innescato un fenomeno sociale, peraltro riscontrato, di ritaglio meditativo della collettivitá, della ricerca di un percorso di (ri)avvicinamento e (ri)scoperta a valori naturalistici, un comfort.</p>
<p>La preposizione al processo progettuale si é disegnata intorno all’IMMERSIONE, come un canone di lettura, valorizzazione ed organizzazione delle emergenze territoriali. Abitare il luogo,  attraverso azioni strategiche propedeutiche a proporre narrazioni spontanee, riflessioni sensoriali, momenti sociali.</p>
<p>Durante il corso sono state organizzati dei sedute di approfondimento delle tematiche di progettazione digitale e fabbricazione assistita con macchine a controllo numerico, utilizzando strumenti come Rhinoceros e Grasshopper.  Inoltre sono state programmate delle visite ai depositi di materiali edili della zona ed incontri e suggerimenti presso i vivai locali, propedeutici alla scelta e successiva realizzazione delle proposte.</p>
<p>La trattazione di tematiche tanto importanti quanto complesse ha permesso di caratterizzare i progetti secondo un approccio prototipale: un progetto capace di evolvere, non solo in termini spaziali o temporali, ma anche programmatici.Capace cioé di valutare le reali rispondenze ai requisiti proposti, senza per questo perdere di valore o significato.</p>
